The debate over the central issue confronted in Closing--the role of the university and the liberal arts in the United States--has become increasingly urgent and contentious. The goal of this collection of essays is to consider what we can learn about the dilemmas confronting American culture through a consideration of both The Closing of the American Mind and the debate it has aroused. The contributors differ among themselves as to the validity of both the diagnoses and the solutions Bloom offers, (...) yet they do not engage in "Bloom-bashing" or hero-worship. The goal of the book is to place the debate over Closing into the larger context than can be achieved in a book review format. I identify three lessons from Kenneth Craik’s landmark book “The Nature of Explanation” for contemporary debates surrounding the existence, extent, and nature of mental representation: first, an account of mental representations as neural structures that function analogously to public models; second, an appreciation of prediction as the central component of intelligence in demand of such models; and third, a metaphor for understanding the brain as an engineer, not a scientist. I then relate these insights to discussions surrounding the (...) representational status of predictive processing – which, I argue, provides a contemporary vindication of Craik’s extremely prescient “hypothesis on the nature of thought.”. Any account of James’s ethics must be constructive and clarifying. As James scholars (...) know, he only wrote one essay focused exclusively on philosophical issues in ethics: “The Moral Philosopher and the Moral Life.” Nonetheless, James’s writings are rife with ethical themes presented in piecemeal fashion. Any interpreter of James’s ethics must fit these different pieces together and smooth out apparent inconsistencies.Lekan maintains that James’s writings on ethics take on two different perspectives. First, the social moral philosopher “seeks to create an inclusive moral order through expansion of sympathetic concern among those committed to different ideals” (2). Second, the existential moral philosopher “addresses the concerns of the moral agent seeking to abate existential doubts, particularly those that arise in the face of evil and suffering” (2). These two perspectives on ethical matters constrain one another, as I shall explain.On Lekan’s account, James’s moral philosophy begins like most pragmatist theories: with persons as we find them, in the thick of life, having diverse interests, and confronting genuine problems that call for a solution. Lekan writes, “James’s starting point is that of a complex self who has limited altruism rooted in sympathetic awareness of like-minded others. Moral philosophy’s fundamental problem is how to extend this limited sympathy to others who do not share one’s values” (4).At the heart of chapter 1 and the book as a whole is Lekan’s defense of the social-moral philosopher’s “Inclusivity Ideal” (15). The Inclusivity Ideal consists of two tenets: (1) “We are morally obligated to satisfy as many demands as possible,” and (2) “among the available ideals we might choose, we are morally obligated to adopt ideals whose realization does not undermine the ideals held by others” (15). Lekan regards the Inclusivity Ideal as a second-order regulative ideal. It is an ideal that “enjoins us to continuously strive for a social order that accommodates diverse ideals” (50). One will naturally wonder what argument supports adoption of the Inclusivity Ideal.Lekan’s argument is rooted in the Sentiogenic Thesis that “goods originate from the desires of sentient beings” (16, emphasis in original). It is because sentient beings have desires that any action can be good or bad at all. Lekan grounds this thesis in James’s Darwinian naturalism according to which “sentience is a function that evolves to fulfill the organism’s need to establish harmony with its environing circumstances” (18). Lekan’s account of what harmony consists in is not developed; he seems to hold that its contrary is frustration arising from when one’s “activities are blocked” (18). I should note that in other places, Lekan phrases the Sentiogenic Thesis as the thesis that “values originate from the feelings of sentient beings” (18). Lekan is not explicit about how desires and feelings are related and how this impacts what is good or has value.Taking the Sentiogenic Thesis in its first formulation as about desires, two additional theses come into play. The first is the Demand Obligation Thesis that “some sentient being S demanding F is necessary and sufficient to generate a prima facie obligation for satisfying S’s demand for F,” and the second is the Essence of Good Thesis that “the essence of the [End Page 671] good is demand satisfaction” (16). Lekan maintains that the Sentiogenic Thesis is the “underlying context” for these two theses. It is not hard to see why: since values originate from desires, and since desires lead one to make demands, it is reasonable to conclude that the good consists in the satisfaction of those demands. Every scholar and reader of William James is aware of his frequent uses of "energy," especially in his discussions of ethics and most notably in his 1906 Presidential Address to the American Philosophical Association, "The Energies of Men".[1] But while other interpretations treat James's use of "energy" as merely one of his several folksy metaphors, The Ethics of Energy: William James's Moral Philosophy in Focus is the first monograph, as its author, Sergio Franzese, rightly claims, to focus (...) upon "energy" as a central concept in James's ethics. Ethics, for James, is not about values, goods, or principles but about the organization of energy, especially into habits, in the service of personal, aesthetic ideals. As such this book is an original and valuable addition to the literature on James, and it does much to bring James into closer dialogue with other recent efforts to rethink ethics without appeal to some rule of reason, whether it be in the form of an utilitarian calculus or a categorical imperative. Such efforts include those of Friedrich Nietzsche, whom Franzese discusses extensively, Max Scheler, whom he mentions only briefly (51-52), and especially Michel Foucault, whom he does not mention at all. A perfectly matched layer (PML) absorbing material composed of a uniaxial anisotropic material is presented for the truncation of finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) lattices. It is shown that the uniaxial PML material formulation is mathematically equivalent to the perfectly matched layer method published by Berenger (see J. Computat. Phys., Oct. 1994). However, unlike Berenger's technique, the uniaxial PML absorbing medium presented in this paper is based on a Maxwellian formulation. Numerical examples demonstrate that the FDTD implementation of the uniaxial PML medium (...) is stable, equal in effectiveness as compared to Berenger's PML medium, while being more computationally efficient. For this 1897 publication, the American philosopher William James brought together ten essays, some of which were originally talks given to Ivy League societies. Accessible to a broader audience, these non-technical essays illustrate the author's pragmatic approach to belief and morality, arguing for faith and action in spite of uncertainty. James thought his audiences suffered 'paralysis of their native capacity for faith' while awaiting scientific grounds for belief. His response consisted in an attitude of 'radical empiricism', which deals (...) practically rather than ideologically with real-world phenomena. When facing a 'momentous' decision about belief, he says, we both can and must choose the best hypothesis. The first four essays apply this principle to religious faith, and the rest explore the pragmatic approach to such topics as determinism, ethics and individual achievement. James developed his ideas further in The Varieties of Religious Experience and Pragmatism, both of which are reissued in this series. (shrink)

The Gifford Lectures were established in 1885 at the universities of St Andrews, Glasgow, Aberdeen and Edinburgh to promote the discussion of 'Natural Theology in the widest sense of the term - in other words, the knowledge of God', and some of the world's most influential thinkers have delivered them. The 1901–2 lectures given in Edinburgh by American philosopher William James are considered by many to be the greatest in the series. The lectures were published in book form in (...) 1902 and have been reprinted many times. James, who was educated in the United States and Europe, and spent much of his career teaching philosophy at Harvard, was very influential in the development of modern psychology, and in these twenty lectures he explores the personal experience of religion. Animal behaviour and welfare research are part of a wider endeavour to optimize the health and wellbeing of humans, animals and ecosystems. As such, it is part of the One Health research agenda. This article applies ethical principles described by the One Health High Level Expert Panel to animal behaviour and welfare research. These principles entail that animal behaviour and welfare research should be valued equitably alongside other research in transdisciplinary and multisectoral collaboration. It should include and promote a multiplicity (...) of marginalized voices, including those of animals, and it should apply and describe a harmonious balance between human—animal-environment interactions. Lastly, it should describe how humans need to change behaviour, adopt sustainable solutions and recognize the importance of animal welfare and the integrity of the whole ecosystem. (shrink)

First published in 1909 (one year before his death), philosopher William James collected several essays into this volume, meant as a sequel to his book "Pragmatism." He wanted to clarify his definition of the truth, and respond to criticism of his previous book.

In his introduction to this collection, John representative. McDermott presents James's thinking in all its manifestations, stressing the importance of radical empiricism and placing into perspective the doctrines of pragmatism and the will to believe. The critical periods of James's life are highlighted to illuminate the development of his philosophical and psychological thought. The anthology features representive selections from The Principles of Psychology, The Will to Believe , and The Variety of Religious Experience in addition to the complete (...) Essays in Radical Empiricism and A Pluralistic Universe . The original 1907 edition of Pragmatism is included, as well as classic selections from all of James's other major works. Of particular significance for James scholarship is the supplemented version of Ralph Barton Perry's Annotated Bibliography of the Writings of William James , with additions bringing it up to 1976. One of the most influential men of his time, philosopher, psychologist, educator, and author William James (1842-1910) helped lead the transition from a predominantly European-centered nineteenth-century philosophy to a new "pragmatic" American philosophy. Helping to pave the way was his seminal book Pragmatism (1907), in which he included a chapter on "Truth," an essay which provoked severe criticism. In response, he wrote the present work, an attempt to bring together all he had ever written on the theory of knowledge, (...) including an article on the function of cognition, later polemic and expository contributions, and some replies to previous criticism.
